Project Endurance

On 12/31/13, often called New Year's Eve, I am going to run for 24 hours straight at Crissy Field in San Francisco. This is a competitive event and the distance completed in 6 hrs, 12 hrs or 24 hrs determines the winners. I'm competing in the 24-hour division. Here is the link to the race:

Why would anyone in their right mind spend New Year's Eve doing this?

I am competing to raise money for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, both in Menlo Park, Ca.

Our 16-year-old daughter Kate, was recently hospitalized at Lucile Packard in the coronary ICU. Kate has since returned to school and is doing fine. Our hospital stay was 10 days during which we met, sat with, talked to and cried with many many parents/family who have had hospitalized loved ones for extended periods of time, some up to a year. Lucile Packard and Ronald McDonald House are near and dear to us.

“Stephen is leading and promoting a lifestyle that aspires to many of the higher qualities of our world: healthy living, a competitive spirit and the compassionate support of his fellow man; it is an inspiration for us all" Brett Hess US Navy SEAL

As many of you know, I compete in triathlons and marathons and ultra marathons and recently had the honor of participating in a 24 hour Navy SEAL event. All of which is leading me to create Project Endurance which will be a not for profit organization focusing on providing families an opportunity to exercise while their loved ones are hospitalized. More to come.

Please make a donation to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital

You can base your donation on the number of miles I run, what the weather is like, what you had for breakfast...whatever works for you.

There will be a website available that you can track all the runners and how many miles run.
You can also send emails to me that race officials will distribute. You can tell me "stop complaining" "keep going" or just let me know you are out there. I have done 24-hour events before and once nighttime , things get tough. If you are in SF on New Year’s Eve with nothing to do, stop by.

“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me.”

All the best to you during your 24 hr run this NYE! We will be thinking of you and cheering you one in spirit. Thank you for creating Project Endurance; what an amazing idea born out of your recent experience with Kate. I can relate to sitting for hours on end at the bedside of a loved one. This time last year, Glenn went through cancer treatment at PAMF with a few emergency visits to Stanford along the way. I would take the stairs from the basement of PAMF up to the 4th floor for a cup of tea as a way to get up and move while Glenn was undergoing treatment. The families that go through the RMcD house are truly in need of a non-profit like Project Endurance. Thank you for sharing this with the PV community and best of luck!
